General Information

¨ The largest Protestant Church in Canada with close to 3 million Canadians who identify their religion as United Church

¨ Founded in 1925 by a freely chosen union of three denominations: The Canadian Methodist Church, The Presbyterian Church and The Congregational Church

¨ Four levels of governance make the church very decentralised: The local church (3,583), the area called the Presbytery (91), Regional Conferences (13) and finally The General Council, a national meeting every 3 years

¨ 3,869 Ordained Ministers: 2,801 men / 1068 women

¨ 267 Diaconal Ministers: 249 women / 18 men

¨ Woman ministers have been ordained since 1936

¨ Clergy have the right to marry

¨ Gay and lesbian ministers have been openly ordained since 1988

¨ The United Church of Canada was the only mainstream Christian Denomination to present a pro-same-sex marriage argument to the Supreme Court of Canada.
