Protestant Church in Canada with close to 3 million Canadians who identify their religion as United Church
* Founded in 1925 by
a freely chosen union of three denominations: The Canadian Methodist Church, The Presbyterian Church and The
Congregational Church
* Four levels of governance make
the church very decentralised: The local church (3, 583), the area called the Presbytery (91), Regional Conferences (13)
and finally The General Council, a national meeting every 3 years
* 3,869 Ordained Ministers: 2,801
men / 1068 women
* 267 Diaconal Ministers:
249 women / 18 men
* Woman ministers have been ordained
since 1936
* Clergy have the right to marry
* Gay and lesbian ministers have
been openly ordained since 1988
* The United Church of Canada was
the only mainstream Christian Denomiation to present a pro-same-sex marriage arguement to the Supreme Court of Canada.
